That first day at the Corporate Podcasting Summit was quite intense in terms of content to swallow and digest. But overall, I thought the day went very well with good quality speakers and some interesting interactivity between speakers and the audience.
I would be lying if I have fully understood every presentation and panelists. There were 13 sessions of approximately 30 mins (questions included) and it's true at some point I was swathing off. Probably because I was already trying to see how could we adopt podcasting in the travel and hospitality industries. I am also more and more convinced about the usability of podcasting from a B2B perspective. I was quite hooked to the study case presented by Pascal Roobrouck from Alcatel-Lucent. They've produced a podcast aimed at their employees in Antwerp and is now available in English to all employees of the company. The preparation and the planning which he went into to make a podcast were beyond what I thought. It takes them on average about 4.8 hours to make a podcast (interview, editing, planning, tagging, RSS, uploading all included).
The first session in the morning was brought by Tom Webster from Edison Media Research which was full of statistics about the awareness of the Podcasting and who is the audience listening to podcasts. I was quite surprised by the age spread of the sample who listened to podcasts.
12 - 17 years 18%
18 - 24 years 11%
25 - 34 years 21%
35 - 44 years 22%
45 - 54 years 16%
+ 55 years 18%
Another interesting presentation was given by Guillaume du Gardier from Edelman who shared with us 3 study cases of podcasting. One of them was the Accor one which I have mentioned before here and here.
I very much liked his top 10 obstacles to online tools like podcasting:
1/ Inadequate resources
2/ Disconnected Employees
3/ Resistance to change (I am always scared of that one)
4/ Desire to control communication / fear of the unknown
5/ Not convinced of the benefits (but please provide me with a business case...)
6/ Perceived lack of IT capabilities
7/ Resistant culture
8/ Senior Management won't allow it
9/ Legal/Governance/Regulations issues (the biggest headache, trust me!)
10/ Would require too much training
I am looking forward to the 2nd day already!
